Ivory Coast will play Guinea in the Cup of Nations quarter finals after beating Mali 3-0 to top Group B.
The tournament favourites won comfortably as Mali limped out of the Nations Cup. Mali’s Freddy Kanoute was substituted for midfielder Mohamed Sissoko at half time as the Eagles struggled to trouble the Ivory Coast defence.
Kolo Toure was sidelined due to a groin injury, Saloman Kalou was suspended and the Elephants rested three other first team players demonstrating the strength in depth of the Ivorian squad.
Didier Drogba celebrated his 50th appearance for the Elephants with his 32nd international goal. Yaya Toure’s sublime pass put his captain through. Drogba finished with composure. Marc Zoro added the second from a corner before Boubacar Sanogo rounded of the night for the travelling fans with the third goal.
‘We had to show the other teams that we’ve come here to do something, to win the cup. So it was an important victory for us. We played a good game and everybody played their part.’ Chelsea’s Solamon Kalou commented after the match.
The Ivory Coast will now face Guinea at the Sekondi Sports Stadium on Sunday 3rd Febraury- a spot in the semi finals is at stake.
The Namibian team were offered cash to fix their final group game against Guinea. Namibian striker Muna Katuposa told New African Soccer that the team’s goalkeeper and some of the defenders had been approached by a Malaysian man who offered $30 000 to each player to throw the game.
‘He asked to arrange the score-line in exchange for money’ said Katuposa.
The approach happened last weekend at the Novotel Hotel in central Accra and was immediately reported to the coach who directed the matter to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
John Muinjo Nambian Football Association President said, ‘I’m very proud that my players came to me straight away. They are a team who believe in fair play.’
The Namibians deserve much credit for their behaviour and performances in Namibia’s second ever Cup of Nations. In Sekondi against Guinea they gained the nations first ever point at this level when they came from behind to draw 1-1. The Brave Warriors will fly home on Friday no doubt to a hero’s welcome.
The incident follows a similar approach made before the tournament to Reinhard Fabisch, coach of Benin, to fix his team’s matches.
It’s believed that the approaches are linked to betting syndicates from South-East Asia. CAF are investigating the allegations.
