Ivory Coast Reveal New Coach

Ulrich Stielike has temporarily stepped down as coach of the Ivory Coast.

With just two weeks before the kick off of the Cup of Nations in Ghana, Stielike has been forced to abandon preparations for the tournament and attend to his son who has fallen into a coma. The Ivorian Football Federation remains hopeful Stielike will be back with the team very soon, and the German coach has not ruled out a return before the end of the tournament.

French coach Gerard Gili, who steered the Ivorian under-23 team to their first Olympic games this year and was part of the coaching team at the ’06 World Cup, has taken over from Stielike and will lead the Elephants into the Cup of Nations.

Appiah Ruled Out of Nations Cup

Ghana captain Stephen Appiah will not play in the upcoming Cup of Nations. The Fenerbache midfielder has suffered complications to a long-standing knee injury and the Black Stars will have to do without him as they play host to the cream of Africa’s football talent.

Ghanaian coach Claude Le Roy responded that “It's terrible news for all the Ghanaian people because it won't be the same team without him”. Appiah has been an inspirational captain for the Black Stars. He lead them to their debut at the ’06 World Cup where he scored the penalty against the USA that took them through to the quarter finals.

In an interview in the latest edition of New African Soccer magazine Appiah said “The Nations Cup means a lot to us and we’re determined to win it”. Appiah was expected to spearhead the Black Stars efforts to claim their fifth Nations Cup final but now Le Roy plans to utulise his experience and enthusiasm behind the scenes where’ll he be special advisor to the team.

Vogts Threatens to Quit

Nigeria coach Berti Vogts has revealed he’s very unhappy with his treatment at the hands of the Nigerian FA.

Just 2 weeks before the Cup of Nations is due to kick off he revealed that he’d been close several times to “throwing in the towel” during his short stint at the helm of the Nigeria national team. He cited problems with the payment of his salary as the main reason behind his discontent.

The former coach of Scotland has had repeated clashes with the Nigerian FA since he took charge of the Super Eagles in January 2007.

Le Roy Aims to Impress

Claude Le Roy promises style and substance from his team as the Cup of Nations approaches. In an exclusive interview in issue 9 of New African Soccer he pledged.

“I know in my team, we have potential, we have a strong squad, and we are hosting the competition so we’d have the crowd behind us. But if we want to keep the crowd routing for us, we have to reward them by producing excellent quality of football, entertain them and win in style, and that is what we intend to do”.
