Nations Cup hosts Ghana won the 4-nation friendly tournament held in Accra. Hearts midfielder Laryea Kingston, scored 2 late goals to seal a 4-2 victory against Benin in the final in Accra.
Black Stars coach Claude Le Roy will have noted that Ghana’s Group A opponents for January, Morocco and Guinea, were both in fine form. Morocco made France sweat in Paris where they were unlucky to draw 2-2. Later in the week they demolished Senegal 3-0 with an experimental line up. Guinea too had a 3-0 victory, away to Angola.
Nigeria saw an injury depleted side lose to Australia at Craven Cottage in London before beating Switzerland 1-0 thanks to a 71st minute goal from defender Taye Taiwo in Zurich.
Mali’s Eagles were the wrong end of two 3-2 thrillers away from home, losing to Senegal and then Algeria.
Elsewhere, South African coach Carlos Alberto Parriera will have been relieved that Bafana Bafana recorded their first victory in 7 games against Canada, Ivory Coast scored a hatful against Qatar, and Egypt were uninspiring in a 0-0 draw with Libya.
