Sammy Obingo has been named the new secretary of the besieged Kenyan Football Federation. The KFF has repeatedly attracted censure from football's world governing body Fifa over the past three years for contravening the organisation's code of conduct and is currently barred from all Fifa competitions.
Obingo's appointment is just one part of the jigsaw in the Federation's extensive restructuring plans aimed at placating the body, according to new President Titus Kasuve.
Obingo takes over from Dan Omino who has been suspended along with former KFF chairman Alfred Sambu, after the KFF refused to amalgamate two parallel football premier divisions operating in the East African country. A parallel league structure is forbidden in the Fifa statutes.
"Obingo takes over as the new secretary to play the leading role in normalising the running of football in the country," said Kasuve.
Obingo's appointment was ratified at an executive committee meeting of the KFF at their new headquarters at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani.
The newly appointed secretary is included in a Kenyan delegation that is scheduled to travel to Zurich this week for talks with Fifa on January 15. The parties will hold talks on the possible reinstatement of the East African country into international football. Kenya have been banned from international football since last October.
Armed robbers attacked players from Nigerian high-flyers Nasawara United in the early hours of Sunday morning (Jan 7).
The attack, which took place around 3 am, saw 11 players seriously injured- although club coach Daniel Amokachie said they have improved considerably since then.
Nasarawa were due to play Lobi Stars in one of the season's openers but the Nigerian Football Association were forced to abandon the game in light of the tragedy.
Nasarawa came second in the Super Four last season after just two seasons in the Premier Division.
The Ghanaian Ministry of Education, Science and Sports has congratulated Black Stars midfield dynamo Michael Essien for winning the BBC African Footballer of the Year trophy for 2006.
The award is not only to the player but to Ghana also as a sporting nation and a boost to the country's rising image in the world of football, said Dr. Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah.
Dr. Owusu Ansah also advised the Ghanaian international not to rest on his laurels but to aim for the ultimate individual accolade, the FIFA World Player of the Year award.
The Chelsea all-rounder was selected Africa's finest by 66 percent of the 12,000 listeners to a BBC radio show as African Footballer of the Year on Friday. The 24-year-old was named ahead of Mohammed Aboutrika, of Egyptian club side El Ahly, and his Chelsea colleague Didier Drogba, of Cote d'Ivoire, who came third.
"I have been playing some good football since the beginning of the season [but] without the contribution of my team-mates at national team and club level, I couldn't have achieved this feat," Essien modestly claimed in his acceptance speech.
"The award is a good confidence booster for me and I hope it can spur me on to win more honours for my club and country," he added.
Previous winners include Senegal's El-Hadji Diouf, Egypt's Mohamed Barakat, Sammy Kuffour of Ghana and Nigeria's Jay Jay Okocha, who won the award twice, in 2003 and 2004.
Ahly's incredible 30-month unbeaten domestic record came to a crashing end on Sunday as they lost 3-0 to Ismaili in the Egyptian league.
It was the first defeat for Ahly in Egypt since they lost the Egyptian Cup final to Arab Contractors in July 2004, and their first league defeat since the loss to city rivals Zamalek in May 2004.
Mohamed Fadl scored twice against his former club as the visitors romped to an historic win, after Abdalla Saied broke the deadlock nine minutes into the top-of-the-table clash.
Fadl doubled the lead just before the interval with a strike from close range, before he scored his ninth goal of the season with seven minutes remaining to seal the victory.
Ahly's lead at the top of the standings has been reduced to six points.
